Rukungiri Municipality Mayor, His Worship Charles Makuru, has announced that the rehabilitation of roads in Rukungiri town and various streets will commence in July. The project will be undertaken by the CHICO company, which is also constructing the Kanungu-Rukungiri tarmac road.

Mayor Makuru made this announcement during the requiem mass for the late Mzee Gabriel Katungi at Christ the King Church, Rukungiri. Katungi, the director of Ruhinda Shop on Karegyesa Road, passed away suddenly last night at Doctors Case Medical Rukungiri.

Makuru explained that the delay in road works was due to poor physical planning from the past, which placed electric poles and water pipes in incorrect positions. Starting next week, these electric poles and some water pipes near the roads slated for renovation will be removed to facilitate road expansion.

He eulogized Katungi as a hardworking friend who loved business and had battled diabetes and high blood pressure for a long time. Makuru added that the deceased had made significant contributions to the development of Rukungiri Municipality.

Byaruhanga Chrisystom Rwakana, the chairperson of the Rukungiri business community, described the late Katungi as a cooperative individual and an elder who provided valuable advice to young businessmen, marking a great loss for the community.

Evelyne Katungi, the widow of the deceased, expressed gratitude to all those, especially the business community, who came to pay their respects. She shared that her husband, who died at the age of 67, left behind seven children after 42 years of marriage.

The requiem mass for the soul of Gabriel Katungi was led by Rev. Fr. Julius Turyatoranwa, the parish priest of Christ the King Church, Rukungiri. He encouraged the widow and children to keep their faith in God and trust Him for protection during this difficult time.

Gabriel Katungi will be laid to rest tomorrow at his ancestral home in Kabira, Mitooma District.
