Members of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) from various parts of Rukungiri held prayers on Thursday to intercede for their former party president, Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye Kifefe, and his co-accused, Abed Lutale, who are currently on remand.
Aloysius Mugarura, the FDC Rukungiri District Chairperson, explained that the prayers aimed to seek justice for Besigye and Lutale, hoping their case could transition from the Court Martial to a civil court. He also highlighted that the prayers were intended to strengthen the party’s unity and resilience in the face of challenges.
It is worth recalling that on November 26, 2024, FDC members planned to gather at the party’s district offices in Rukungiri Municipality along Rubabo Road for similar prayers. However, security forces dispersed them, disrupting the event. This prompted members to choose a different venue, eventually resolving to pray at Besania Prayer Mountain in Rukungiri Municipality.
Despite their preparations, the police warned against using the new venue, citing a lack of clearance. Undeterred, the party members proceeded with their prayers.
Agaba Wycliff, a party member who led the sermon at Besania, encouraged attendees to remain steadfast and hopeful, emphasizing that God still has good plans for the FDC. He urged members to continue praying, asserting that other efforts to bring change in Uganda’s leadership have so far been unsuccessful.
Among the attendees was former Rukungiri Woman MP, Bamukwatsa Betty Muzanira. She reassured members that the FDC remains strong despite the incarceration of its leaders. Muzanira called on congregants not only to pray for Besigye and Abed but also for a group of 36 party supporters, including Tumuhimbise Innocent Rubarondesa, who were arrested in Kenya in July and are now out on bail.
