Physical education educators in Rukungiri District have expressed dissatisfaction over the poor games and sports facilities, which they say are hindering sports development in the district.

This concern was raised today, Thursday, 5th June 2025, during the Sports Day event held at Kashenyi Secondary School in Ruhinda Sub-county, Rukungiri District.

Kashenyi Secondary School organized the Sports Day to give students an opportunity to develop their talents and self-esteem as they prepare for the Ball 2 District Championship.

Students competed in various disciplines, including athletics, javelin, shot put, discus, high jump, long jump, and triple jump. The competitions were held according to class groups, with Form Five emerging as the overall winner, followed by Form Six.

Coach Akankwatsa Mark Base, a Level 2 coach who oversaw the competitions, expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of sports facilities and the negative attitude of some parents towards the value of sports.

Rev. Ivan Mwongera, the head teacher of Kashenyi Secondary School, thanked God for the successful event and encouraged parents to support sports, especially during the holidays, to help empower their children with talent and skills for future opportunities.

Amanya Clare Tracy, a footballer, expressed her deep love for the sport, hoping it would earn her a scholarship and future income. However, she raised concerns over the lack of equipment needed to prevent injuries and the absence of a quality playground.

Nasasira Prosper, an athlete, shared his passion for athletics as a way to maintain good health and build social networks, but he also criticized the poor condition of the playgrounds.
