The residents of Nyamuniga cell in Kihanga parish, Buhunga sub county, Rukungiri district, on Saturday received a donation of 5000 water harvesting tanks to address the water scarcity issue in their community. The generous donation was made by the Rukungiri district woman legislator, Hon. Medius Natukunda.
Facing the challenge of having to trek almost 4 kilometers to obtain water, which was also unsafe for consumption, the residents expressed gratitude for the water tanks. The donated tanks are expected to provide a reliable source of clean water, especially during the rainy season, as their existing water sources have been compromised by floods and are situated far from the community.
Rhona Amumpeire, a resident, highlighted the difficulties faced by women in the area, where a jerry can of water could cost between 500-700, and some resorted to using stagnant water from bricklaying holes, posing health risks. Muhwezi Steven emphasized that access to safe water had been a long-standing challenge, impacting both the economy and health of the community. While awaiting government efforts to connect piped water to their area, the donated tanks are seen as a crucial interim solution.
Nason Mukwenda, the lay leader of Nyamuniga Church of Uganda, where one of the tanks was installed, emphasized the positive impact on the community’s access to clean water. He stated that the water tank would benefit everyone, regardless of tribe or religion, and pledged the community’s commitment to protect and responsibly use the valuable resource.
Notably, Nyamuniga and Rwabararira Catholic Church in Buhunga sub county have already received two water harvesting tanks, with additional locations awaiting their installations as requested by the community.
Benon Mugisha, the Buhunga sub county chairperson, commended Hon. Natukunda for her initiative in installing water tanks at various public places, including churches, health facilities, and schools. This initiative aims to alleviate water scarcity, particularly in areas facing significant challenges.
It is worth recalling that Hon. Medius Natukunda Kaharata had pledged to install tanks at different schools and health facilities across the district during the belated Women’s Day festivity held in Nyakagyeme sub county earlier this year.
