Rukungiri District is currently conducting a rabies vaccination campaign for all pets to prevent rabies and related issues.
In a telephone interview with our reporter yesterday, Dr. Johnson Ninsiima, the Rukungiri District Veterinary Officer, mentioned that they began the campaign on Monday with 4,000 doses, enough to cover three sub-counties.
The campaign started in Nyarushanje sub-county and will proceed to Nyakishenyi, Kebisoni, Buyanja, and finally Rujumbura. However, Dr. Ninsiima noted that the schedule might change if rabies cases or dog bites are reported in specific areas.
He also expressed concern about residents who refuse to participate in the program despite having pets at home, urging local leaders to educate their communities about the risks of keeping unvaccinated pets.
