The Rukungiri business community is urging local authorities in Rukungiri to strategize and bring educational and healthcare institutions to the district to enhance their customer base and foster the overall development of Rukungiri.

In the wake of the district budget conference held on November 3, 2023, Byaruhanga Chrysostom Rwakaana, the chairperson of the Rukungiri business community, expressed to our reporter the importance of bringing institutions like a university and a hospital to the area. He believes that these additions would attract a larger population, which, in turn, could bolster trade in Rukungiri, leading to economic development.

According to a report presented by Gideon Ntunguura, who serves as the Rukungiri district secretary for finance, planning, and administration, the theme for the financial year 2024/2025 will be “Full monetization of Uganda’s economy through commercial agriculture, industrialization, expanding and broadening services, digital transformation, and market access.”

The report outlines the 2024/2025 budget’s objectives, aiming to consolidate and accelerate socio-economic transformation. It also seeks to achieve a 6% to 7% increase in economic growth over the medium term by transitioning from a raw material-based economy to one focused on manufacturing and knowledge, while also improving the ease of doing business and making Uganda more competitive.

Ntunguura emphasized that the priorities for the upcoming fiscal year’s budget will include implementing the parish development model, improving infrastructure development to reduce the cost of doing business, investing in the local population, supporting private sector development, addressing security and governance issues, and removing obstacles to tourism development.

Geoffrey Kyomukama, the Rukungiri district chairperson, pledged to collaborate with relevant authorities to ensure that the district undergoes proper planning. He particularly highlighted the focus on road infrastructure to facilitate trade and transportation of agricultural produce.
