In response to a video circulating on social media, and broadcasted by Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC TV) claiming that Bishop Dan Zoreka of the Diocese of Kinkiizi rejected a donation of iron sheets from Hon. Dr. Chris Baryomunsi for St. Peter’s Cathedral, Nyakatare, the bishop has clarified that these allegations are untrue.

According to the bishop, the video appear to be intended to create unwarranted tension and discord within the community, and to present the Diocese of Kinkiizi and the Church of Uganda in a negative light.

The actual events took place during a thanksgiving service for Rt Rev Dan Zoreka on November 5th, 2023. Hon. Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, who serves as the Minister of ICT and is a Member of Parliament for Kinkiizi East, offered to donate iron sheets to reroof the Cathedral. However, a generous member of the Diocese, Dr. James Musinguzi Garuga, had already provided the necessary iron sheets and delivered them to the Cathedral before the event.

Bishop Dan Zoreka acknowledged the Minister’s generosity and informed him that the iron sheets had already been obtained and delivered. He suggested that the Minister’s contribution be converted into a monetary donation to support the purchase of roofing materials, to which Hon. Baryomunsi graciously agreed. He contributed Twenty Million Ugandan Shillings (UGX 20M) in cash.

The Diocese of Kinkiizi has however expressed its gratitude for Hon. Dr. Chris Baryomunsi’s contribution and looks forward to continued collaboration with him for the betterment of the community.

During Bishop Dan Zoreka’s Thanksgiving Service, the collective efforts of faithful Christians, partners, and well-wishers raised over UGX 250M. Additional resources are being sought to expedite the renovation of the Cathedral.

The Diocese now calls upon UBC TV to issue an apology for their misleading report and urges all media outlets to ensure accurate and balanced reporting to prevent unnecessary confusion among the people of Uganda.
