Residents and leaders from Rugaraama North Sub-county in Ntungamo District have joined forces to temporarily repair the broken Omurugyera Bridge, which has disrupted their daily activities and hindered development. The bridge connects Ntungamo District to other parts of the region via the Omukiyenje-Kyafoora road. To address the issue, residents have pooled resources, including financial contributions and labor, to facilitate the movement of goods and people.
Edson Tibeijuka, a concerned citizen and coordinator of the repair initiative, highlighted that this is not the first time the bridge has collapsed. In the past, he organized similar efforts to create a temporary solution. However, Tibeijuka expressed frustration about the lack of attention from authorities, citing his limited influence within government structures. He urged all residents to actively participate in the repair effort, emphasizing that the road serves their community.
Fred Muhumuza, the LC2 chairperson, stressed the importance of the road in transporting agricultural products such as milk and bananas and connecting residents to essential services in nearby districts like Rukungiri. Muhumuza warned that without immediate repairs, the community would feel isolated, akin to being stranded on an island. He called on responsible authorities to address the issue urgently.
Amanya Ivan Rwanyakibare, the LC3 chairperson, confirmed his commitment to mobilizing resources for the repair. He also cautioned road users to exercise caution as the bridge remains in a precarious condition. Rwanyakibare expressed gratitude to everyone contributing to the effort and revealed that attempts to involve the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) were unproductive. UNRA officials reportedly stated that the road no longer falls under their jurisdiction—a statement echoed by Engineer Alison when contacted by reporters.
Rwanyakibare called upon residents of Rugaraama North and neighboring areas to support the repair initiative, emphasizing the importance of the road for accessing markets, schools, and healthcare facilities.
