A dramatic showdown unfolded at the Rubanda District Council on Thursday as councilors demanded answers about the fate of embattled District Production Officer Benon Kahangi, who was interdicted six months ago for misappropriating over Shs 200 million.

Tensions escalated when Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Alex Kwizera revealed that Kahangi’s interdiction period was nearing its end and he would soon return to office. Led by Rubanda District LC 5 Male Youth Councilor Wilfred Arinda Nsheeka, the councilors vehemently protested, warning that Kahangi would face severe consequences, including lynching if he returned to office without facing justice.

Arinda accused Kwizera of colluding with Kahangi to embezzle the funds and facilitating his smooth return to office. Councillor Diaz Drake Owoyesigire of Hamuhambo Town Council threatened to organize a protest if Kahangi returned before facing the law. He requested the CAO provide another update on the investigations.

Sources at the Inspector of Government’s (IG) Kigezi branch, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that Kahangi’s file is complete and awaiting a final decision from the Inspector General of Government, Betty Kamya.

Rubanda District LC5 Chairman Stephen Ampeire Kasyaba urged investigators to expedite their work and produce a report so that Kahangi can be taken to court. Kasyaba expressed concern that if Kahangi reassumes office, he may sue the district for improper interdiction. He urged the Chief Administrative Officer to write to the investigating officers to inquire about the progress of the investigation so the district can determine its stance.
