Local leaders in Bugangari sub-county, Rukungiri district, have reported a surge in incidents of domestic violence.

Emily Ankunda, the Bugangari sub-county chief, disclosed that during sensitization and mobilization meetings held across all parishes in the sub-county last November and December, they discovered a troubling increase in domestic violence cases.

She stated that they are currently registering nearly 20 cases of domestic violence daily, necessitating urgent attention. Ankunda called upon church leaders and responsible citizens to assist in community sensitization efforts to mitigate the rising number of domestic violence cases.

Ankunda expressed satisfaction with certain community-based groups that have implemented stringent rules to govern their members, cautioning against behaviors that could lead to domestic violence. She cited the example of the Kakindo Tukwatanise Savings and Loans Association.

She identified alcoholism and disputes over land sales as key factors contributing to the escalating number of cases. Ankunda noted that many cases are resolved within local councils without involving the police or sub-county offices, leading to underreporting.

Wilber Twijukye, the chairperson of Kakido Tukwatanise Savings and Loans Association, stated that they were compelled to enact measures against domestic violence among their members to promote stability within their society, given that the association consists of couples. He emphasized that any member found guilty of domestic violence faces sanctions and potential expulsion from the association.

Twijukye added that they are actively encouraging all members to formalize their unions through marriage, believing that this will reduce the likelihood of domestic violence occurrences.
