Retired headteachers have been called upon to engage in income-generating projects. This call was made by Turyazayo David Kapiira, the chairperson of Rukungiri District Retired Headteachers Association, during a meeting held at Rukungiri District Council Hall.
According to Turyazayo, retired headteachers should not only focus on waiting for their pension but rather start projects like beekeeping, piggery, and coffee growing, among others—all of which will boost their income.
Furthermore, Turyazayo noted that the association started on 25th Jan 2023 and is made up of retired headteachers—those of secondary and primary schools, principals of institutions, and other education officers. Moreover, Turyazayo revealed that the primary goals of the association are to maintain solidarity and unity, remain relevant, learn how to live a professional life, and most importantly, share ideas on other income-generating activities.
Madam Biliho Lovence Komujuni, the chairperson of the Uganda National Teachers Union (UNATU) Rukungiri District, thanked the retired headteachers for forming this association, which unites them. She comforted them, saying that retiring in the Government doesn’t mean the end of their journey. She insisted that they can as well participate in other works and keep united and influenced the retired headteachers to join UNATU.
She highlighted that in case of a deceased member of UNATU, the family can be provided five hundred thousand shillings for condolences. Not only that, UNATU helps retired headteachers to get pension and gratuity in time and with no payment. Citing that in case of any crime, a UNATU member can be given a lawyer to judge that crime.
Tumwesigye Paddy, a member of Rukungiri District Retired Headteachers Association, supplemented by calling upon other retired headteachers to join the association as its objectives are to live better and educate others. He urged the retired inspectors, teachers and headteachers to always join associations, not being too active in home works only (like digging), but also unite worldwide for a better life after retirement.
