Residents of Rwenanuura and Buhandagazi villages in Nyabitete Parish, Buyanja Sub-county, Rukungiri District, have joined forces to construct a temporary bridge to improve transportation in their communities.
Wilson Bihamiire, the LC1 chairperson of Buhandagazi Village, and Eliab Tugume, the chairperson of Rwenanuura Cell, explained that through communal effort, they built a bridge over River Rwenanuura. This initiative was driven by the need to facilitate access to their gardens and businesses across the two villages.
Despite repeated appeals to the sub-county leadership for a permanent bridge yielding no results, the residents sought external support. Bob Rugonde, an aspiring Member of Parliament for Rubabo Constituency, stepped in to provide culverts and other essential construction materials for the project.
Residents who participated in the community work expressed relief, particularly during the rainy season, as the bridge has significantly reduced the risks associated with crossing the river. This has been especially beneficial for school children, whose safety was a major concern.
The community now calls on the Buyanja Sub-county leadership to prioritize road rehabilitation and the construction of a permanent bridge. They also commended Bob Rugonde for his initiative, which has helped safeguard lives, particularly those of school-going children. Additionally, they urged local leaders to focus on service delivery rather than attempting to bribe voters with money, which ultimately leaves the community struggling.
Simon Aijuka, a resident of Rwenanuura, highlighted the challenges residents face during the rainy season, noting that school children often miss lessons due to unsafe crossings. He emphasized the importance of electing leaders who prioritize service delivery over offering monetary bribes.
