Residents of Kigaga Village in Nyakinengo Parish, Nyakagyeme Sub-County, Rukungiri District, have voiced their frustration over the prolonged absence of electricity in their area.

Their hopes were initially raised six years ago when electric poles and wires were installed in some parts of the village by a former Member of Parliament. However, since then, no progress has been made, leaving residents disappointed and development stalled.

Dinah Twineobuzare, a resident of Kigaga Village, expressed her dismay, stating that despite numerous efforts to reach out to the relevant authorities, no action has been taken. She highlighted that the lack of electricity has severely hindered development, with deteriorating poles standing as a reminder of unfulfilled promises.

“The absence of electricity makes it difficult for businesses such as salons, electronics repair shops, and computer users to operate effectively. This has left many of us at a disadvantage,” Dinah lamented. She appealed to the concerned authorities to address the issue promptly to facilitate development in the area.

Norah Sabiti, the Local Council II Chairperson for Nyakinengo Parish, echoed the residents’ concerns. She emphasized the active participation of the community in elections, only to be let down by elected representatives who have failed to address their pressing needs.

Sabiti noted that while the former MP installed electric poles, no further progress has been made. She explained that many residents had envisioned economic ventures like salons and welding businesses, only to abandon them due to the lack of electricity. This situation has forced some to relocate to areas with power, hampering local economic growth. She attributed the delay in electrification to the failure of leaders to follow through on their commitments.

Alex Muzinga, the District Councillor for Nyakagyeme, acknowledged the residents’ concerns, stating that leaders are aware of the situation and are hopeful that the relevant authorities will address it. He urged residents to remain patient, assuring them that leaders are equally committed to the development of the area.

“We understand the challenges faced by our people, and we continue to push for solutions. We ask the residents to bear with us as we work to bring development to our communities,” Muzinga said.

The residents remain hopeful that their long-standing plea for electricity will soon be addressed, enabling the area to realize its developmental potential.
