Residents of Rwakabengo Ward, Southern Division, Rukungiri Municipality are planning to protest and demolish the Rwakabengo Health Center III mortuary due to concerns about their safety.
Residents allege that three dead bodies recently deposited by the police are rotting in the mortuary, contaminating the air and affecting their well-being.
Enid Tumuhairwe, a resident living next to the mortuary, reported living in distress for the past three days and appealed for a lasting solution from local leaders, stating that residing near the health facility has become a significant burden.
Francis Bamukomire, an elderly resident of Rwakabengo Ward, has called for the elevation of the health facility to improve service delivery and better maintain the mortuary.
Joram Baryamanya, commonly known as JB, the Chairperson of LC1 Rwakabengo A Cell, revealed the protest plans by residents and suggested relocating the mortuary to alleviate the burden on residents.
Denis Ngabirano, the Chairperson of LC3 Southern Division, expressed concern over the delay in constructing a well-positioned mortuary. He emphasized that a recent meeting with municipal authorities confirmed that funds for the construction are available.
