Residents of Bitereko Sub-County in Mitooma District have expressed frustration over the delayed construction of Nchweera Bridge, citing frequent fatal accidents and hindrances to economic development in the area.

The bridge, which connects Mitooma Sub-County and Bitereko, is crucial for trade, commerce, and the transportation of farm produce. It was promised for construction next year by Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Hon. Thomas Tayebwa. However, residents claim they have been given repeated assurances over the years, including promises from President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, yet no tangible progress has been made.

Speaking to a Boona FM reporter, Tweheyo Dan, a resident, expressed his frustration over the continued delays. He emphasized that the deteriorating condition of the bridge has led to numerous accidents and disrupted businesses. He urged the government to address their concerns and expedite the construction process.

Kyamwenja LC1 Chairperson, Harigo Justus, also raised concerns about the bridge’s poor state. He explained that residents attempted to make temporary fixes using wooden logs to allow motorcycles to pass, but heavy trucks and lorries trying to cross caused further damage. He noted that a vehicle belonging to the District Education Officer (DEO) recently fell into the broken bridge, though fortunately, no lives were lost. Harigo appealed to the government to fulfill its promise and ensure the bridge’s construction to facilitate economic growth in the region.

Rutookye Parish Councilor, Lemigious Tuhimbise, acknowledged the dire state of the bridge and confirmed that local leaders had engaged Hon. Thomas Tayebwa regarding the matter. According to him, the Deputy Speaker explained that although funds for the project were allocated in the budget, they have not yet been released. He called for patience and trust in their hardworking leader, assuring residents that the promise would be fulfilled.
