Residents and leaders in Kyabashenyi, Nyamunuka Town Council, are concerned about the deteriorating state of the Kahengye-Kyabashenyi road, which they say has become impassable.
A resident of Kitare village, who preferred to remain anonymous, highlighted the struggle of accessing transport to towns like Rwashamaire, Nyamunuka, and Kyabashenyi for essential services. She recalled that when KAHIPU Construction Ltd first built the road, taxis operated on the route, easing transportation. However, the current poor state makes it difficult for boda bodas and heavy vehicles to transport produce like coffee and bananas.
LC1 Chairperson of Kashenyi cell, Asuman Katafa, confirmed the road is in a devastating condition and criticized the district for failing to renovate the 25 km stretch.
He noted that the road previously served as a key transport link to schools, churches, and markets, and while leaders have engaged district officials, they have only received promises of renovation.
Asuman attributed the delay to Nyamunuka Town Council’s large size, with over 60 villages, and the district’s reliance on a single tractor for all road works.
Meanwhile, Asuman Kigongo, the LC5 Councilor for Nyamunuka and Ntungamo district Vice Chairperson, reassured residents that the road is included in the district budget and will be constructed in the fourth quarter of the 2025 financial year at a cost of over UGX 90 million.
