Women from Murama Parish, Nyakishenyi Subcounty in Rukungiri District were all smiles on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, as Hon. Doreen Busingye Muheru provided them with pigs to improve their livelihoods.
Through the Evasta Women Development Foundation, a non-governmental organization founded by Hon. Doreen Muheru in 2001 to support women and children, the initiative continues to uplift communities. As part of this ongoing effort, seven pigs were distributed to women to promote income-generating activities and enhance their economic stability.
This program aims to offer alternative sources of income beyond pig farming, helping beneficiaries manage their responsibilities and improve their overall quality of life.
Santrina Tumuhirwe, chairperson of the Mulago Bakyala Kwetunguura Group, and Tumubirwe Constance, a member, explained that Hon. Doreen encouraged them to form enterprise groups for support. In response, they organized a group of 64 members, which led to the donation of seven pigs.
They urged members to take good care of the pigs to ensure they multiply, enabling every member to eventually own one as a sustainable source of income. The women praised Hon. Doreen for her efforts in poverty eradication through such initiatives.
On the same day, Hon. Doreen Busingye extended her support to residents of Bunono Parish in Nyarushanje Subcounty, who have long struggled with access to clean water.
Residents had been relying on contaminated water, putting them at risk of waterborne diseases. To address this, Hon. Doreen provided financial assistance to help purchase materials for constructing a spring in the area.
Local leaders, including Davis Kabashariira, LC2 chairperson of Bunono, and Augustin Tushabe, chairperson of Izinga II Village, expressed their appreciation for her support. They urged other leaders to follow her example by prioritizing community welfare and providing essential services.
Residents who participated in the community work for the spring also expressed their gratitude to Hon. Doreen.
In appreciation of her efforts, they pledged their support for her in the upcoming elections, where she is contesting for the Rubabo Constituency parliamentary seat.
