Residents of Kiyaga Parish in Nyabihoko Sub County, Kajara County, Ntungamo District are living in fear following repeated attacks by an unidentified wild animal that has been killing livestock in the area.
Cattle keepers and farmers say the mysterious animal has caused significant losses by attacking sheep, goats, and pigs during the night. In some cases, the animal reportedly kills the livestock by sucking blood, while in others it partially eats the animals.
One of the affected farmers reported that the animal recently attacked a sheep farm in Kiyaga Village, killing 13 sheep in a single night. The herdsman said he discovered the incident early Sunday morning when he found the sheep kraal filled with dead animals. Some sheep were missing while others that survived had severe injuries, including broken legs and torn skin.
Residents say similar incidents had previously been reported in distant areas, but they are now concerned that the threat has reached their community.
Local leaders have acknowledged that several farmers have suffered losses due to the attacks. They are urging residents to strengthen the security of livestock enclosures at night by fencing kraals and ensuring animals are properly protected.
Leaders have also encouraged communities to work together to trace the animal, particularly in nearby swamps and forests where it could be hiding. At the same time, farmers have been warned not to consume the remains of animals killed by unknown predators, as they could pose health risks.
Authorities and community leaders say the situation is worrying and are calling for coordinated efforts among residents to identify and eliminate the animal before it causes further losses or poses a threat to human life.
