Residents in Kanungu district have voiced their grievances regarding the deteriorating condition of the roads in the area.
The road infrastructure is marked by deep gullies and sand deposits, posing significant challenges for locals to access essential services such as healthcare.
Among the most affected routes is the Kanungu-Rutenga road, connecting Kabale and linking four sub-counties: Kinaaba, Mashenya, Rutenga, and Rutenga Town Council. These roads are crucial for reaching major markets and trading centers like Mafuuga and Katojo Bugarika, which play a pivotal role in the livelihoods of the community.
Residents report that some roads have gone without repairs for the past five years, with sporadic attention from authorities only during election periods. According to Alex Arinda, the district councilor for Rutenga Town Council, the deep gullies on the roads have led to numerous accidents. Despite repeated pleas to the district authorities for road rehabilitation, no action has been taken.
Arinda emphasized that the poor road conditions are impeding access to health services in the area, particularly for expectant mothers. The challenges include difficulties in transporting patients, especially at night.
In an appeal to the government, responsible leaders, and the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA), Arinda urged immediate maintenance work on the roads to address the pressing issues faced by the community.
Brian, a boda boda rider, highlighted the economic impact on their livelihoods, noting a decline in customers due to the road damage exacerbated by heavy rains. This has resulted in financial difficulties for riders, affecting their ability to provide for their families.
