Residents of Nyakinengo Parish in Nyakagyeme Sub County, Rukungiri District have called on the government to protect and develop the proposed Kashegu Water Falls in order to boost tourism and increase local revenue collection.

Kashegu Water Falls is located along the Rukungiri–Kanungu Road near River Birara in Kirehe Cell, Nyakinengo Parish. The falls receive a large volume of water from the Omukishenyi papyrus swamp, which pours into the wide Birara River, creating a scenic site with strong tourism potential.

Residents say the area has already started attracting visitors, including foreign tourists who are often seen taking photographs at the site. However, community members note that the area remains undeveloped and lacks proper safety measures.

Local residents also expressed concern about the dangers faced by people who fetch water and carry out other domestic activities around the falls, saying the lack of protection at the site puts lives at risk. They are appealing to the government to safeguard the area and develop it both for safety and tourism purposes.

Community members further revealed that there had previously been information about government plans to establish a dam along the falls, which would help support irrigation for farmers in the area. However, they say the project has never materialized.

Local leaders confirmed that the government had indeed considered constructing a dam at the site but the plan was reportedly halted due to insufficient water levels. Instead, they are now encouraging the government to consider developing tourism infrastructure such as cottages to attract visitors and generate revenue for the district.

The Rukungiri District Tourism Office has acknowledged the beauty and tourism potential of Kashegu Water Falls. The office has called for partnerships and collaboration with the Uganda Tourism Board to promote the site as a tourist attraction.

Residents believe that if the falls are properly protected and developed, they could become an important tourism destination in Rukungiri District while also creating economic opportunities for the surrounding communities.
