The Office of the Rukungiri Resident District Commissioner (RDC) has assured 74-year-old Restatuta Korugyendo Rubondo that she can live on and use her land without fear. Restatuta, a resident of Kishonga Lower Cell, Rubanga Parish, Buyanja Sub County in Rukungiri District, has been facing threats of murder from her biological son, Lemigio Bangirana, due to ongoing land disputes.

Restatuta, a widow of the late Kurineriyo Rubondo who passed away in 2019, was left a will that detailed the distribution of his properties among his widow, son, and daughters. However, Lemigio Bangirana defied the provisions of the will and claimed the entire land for himself.

Despite reporting the issue to the police in 2019, Restatuta received no assistance. On Tuesday, 27th August 2024, the LC3 Chairperson of Buyanja Sub County, Agaba Emmy Rubondo, organized a mediation meeting presided over by Rotarian Steven Nsubuga Bewayo, the Rukungiri RDC.

Lemigio Bangirana and his wife, Honest Byamugisha, escaped from the meeting, but RDC Steven Nsubuga Bewayo reassured Restatuta that she could use her land without fear and warned that he would intervene in any future disturbances.

Restatuta shared that she has not been living in her home due to fear of being murdered and criticized the police for their failure to arrest the accused.

Izidoro Karakire, a family elder, and George Matomi, the Secretary of the will, condemned Lemigio Bangirana for causing unnecessary conflict and wasting people’s time and resources in repeated meetings over a clear issue.

While Lemigio publicly acknowledges the validity of the will, he continues to secretly oppose his mother.

Afande Muzeeyi Bernard Amanya, the OC of Buyanja Police Post, advised the youth to learn from this incident, emphasizing that inheritance should be based on the respect and discipline shown to parents, as it is ultimately determined by them.

Emmy Agaba Rubondo attributed the domestic violence to police negligence and praised the community for refraining from mob justice.
