Three individuals were on Wednesday apprehended during a protest regarding the electricity shortage in Kihihi Town Council as they attempted to reach the offices of UEDCL to seek clarification on the persistent power outages affecting the area.
The detainees, identified as Muyambi Mbabazi Julius, Kangume Nshabe Marius, and Karibuni Geoffrey, were formally charged with inciting violence at Kihihi Police Station in Kanungu District.
The arrests came after a gathering of demonstrators who marched peacefully with placards expressing dissatisfaction with the worsening electricity crisis. Messages such as “We are tired of electricity outages,” “Darkness is risking our lives at night,” and “Enough is enough, we are tired of poor leadership” adorned the chests of some protesters.
Demonstrators also voiced concerns about the intermittent nature of the electricity supply, highlighting the detrimental impact on electronic devices, computers, and welding machines. Traders lamented significant losses and increased expenditure on fuel for generators due to the electricity crisis.
Tensions escalated when police encircled the protest leaders, leading to their arrest, and prompting some attendees to react violently.
While the police have yet to provide an official statement on the reason for the arrests, the detainees have been released on police bond pending charges of inciting violence.
Following their release, Muyambi Julius Mbabazi, Karibuni Geoffrey, and Kangumoshabe Marius vowed to continue demonstrating until the grievances of the citizens are addressed.
They emphasized the economic strain on traders who, despite paying licenses and rent for their businesses, find themselves unable to operate effectively due to the lack of electricity.
