Rukungiri Municipal Council has officially announced that, starting from November 1, 2023, private sector companies will take over the responsibility of garbage collection.

Charles Makuru, the Mayor of Rukungiri Municipal Council, has stated that this decision aligns with a government policy aimed at enhancing cleanliness and reducing municipal expenses. He emphasized that each division has been spending over 30 million annually on garbage collection, and these funds can now be redirected towards other developmental initiatives.

Nuwamanya Robert, the Town Clerk of Rukungiri Municipal Council, noted that this system has been successfully implemented in other towns for some time. He added that a procurement committee is currently evaluating potential bidders, and the selected service provider will commence operations on November 1, 2023.

Karenzi Paul, the Senior Assistant Town Clerk of Western Division, believes that this policy comes at a crucial time, as the municipal garbage trucks are currently out of service. He encouraged the public to cooperate in keeping the town clean.

Under this new system, individuals depositing garbage will be required to pay a fee.
