The leaders of Bushenyi District, in collaboration with the environmental police, have launched an ambitious initiative to restore the Kyamugabira River.

The Kyamugabira wetland, situated in Kyabugimbi sub-county, serves as a vital link between Nyakabirizi Division and Kitagata in Sheema District but has suffered from encroachment due to human activities.

Vincent Kataate, the Bushenyi District environmental officer, reported that more than three hectares of the wetland had been encroached upon and depleted by local residents who drained the swamp to make way for farming and other agricultural activities.

The restoration efforts, which began in Bumbaire sub-county at the start of this week, are expected to extend across the entire district.

Puritaz Mujuni, the head of the environmental police in the greater Bushenyi region, issued a warning to those occupying the encroached wetlands, urging them to vacate voluntarily.

He emphasized that those who refuse to comply will face arrest and prosecution, emphasizing the importance of cooperation in restoring the wetlands for the benefit of future generations.

These efforts come in the wake of President Yoweri Museveni’s recent commitment to issue an executive order aimed at ensuring that those who have encroached upon wetlands are compelled to vacate.
