The territorial police in Rukungiri are investigating the circumstances surrounding the tragic shooting of a prison warder on the morning of February 27, 2025. The incident took place at around 1:00 AM at Babuuze Bar and Lodge, located in Kakabada A cell, Rukungiri Municipality.

The victim, 33-year-old L/CPL Ojok Boniface, a prison warder attached to Uganda Prisons in Rukungiri, was allegedly shot by 22-year-old Peter Byaruhanga, a security guard with S.W.A.T.T. Security Limited. Byaruhanga, a resident of Kakabada A cell, is currently in police custody.

According to reports, on the evening of February 26, 2025, L/CPL Ojok Boniface and fellow warder, No: 20355 Otim James, visited the bar to watch a football match. After the match, the deceased handed his phone to Otim and went to the rear of the bar. Shortly afterward, Otim heard a gunshot and immediately rushed to the source of the sound. Upon arrival, he found his colleague, L/CPL Ojok, fatally shot.

Otim quickly informed the Uganda Prisons in-charge, ASP Kilara Ceaser Awany, who reported the incident to Rukungiri police. Byaruhanga, the suspect, claims that the deceased had attempted to steal a generator, while other accounts suggest that the shooting followed an argument between the two.

The scene was promptly visited, processed, and documented by the authorities. The weapon used in the shooting, a UG POS 56 firearm, was recovered along with three rounds of ammunition. The body of L/CPL Ojok was transported to Rwakabengo Health Center III mortuary for postmortem.

Enquiries into the matter are ongoing, and the suspect remains in custody as investigations continue. The police are working to determine the exact circumstances leading to this tragic event according to ASP Maate Elly, PRO Kigezi

The management of babuze should always take kin analysis while employing their security personnel, its a great loss of our warder( MHSRIP) This is a 2nd fatal incident which occurred at the same bar within less than 3 years . Security authorities should ensure tough measures and regulations on this bar and lodges to avoid more loss of lives.

Even the prison warders or all fire armed men, they are even badly behaved in public. They are the ones that takes much alcohol. Even they are the ones that starts fights in bars. I really know that place very well
