Residents of Kishanda 1, 2, and Nyakayaga cells in Nyakinengo Parish, Nyakagyeme Subcounty, Rujumbura County, Rukungiri District, have expressed their dissatisfaction with local leadership, accusing them of neglecting their community. The residents, speaking during a community meeting at Omukashanda Trading Centre, warned that they might either shun the 2026 elections or cast protest votes in response to the failure of leaders to deliver essential services.
The residents voiced concerns over the lack of basic infrastructure in their area, such as water supply, electricity, and roads. They claimed that these deficiencies have hindered development and service delivery. According to them, political leaders—from LC1 to Parliament—make promises during election campaigns but fail to follow through once elected.
Led by LC1 leaders from the three villages, the residents stated they would now prioritize candidates who demonstrate a commitment to action rather than mere promises. They emphasized that despite their area being rich in agricultural production, the inaccessibility of roads, absence of electricity for activities like welding, and lack of clean water have significantly impacted their development.
With an estimated 1,600 families across the three villages and over 100,000 voters, the residents are growing frustrated. Some are threatening to protest through their votes, while others are considering seeking permission from security authorities to hold public protests to demand better service delivery.
In response to the residents’ complaints, Mr. Isaac Kaharuza, a political assistant to Gen. Jim Muhwezi, assured the public that the issues raised were being addressed. Kaharuza explained that efforts were underway to secure funding for electricity from Kuwait, with Rukungiri and Mitooma Districts being prioritized for connection. He also mentioned that the Rujumbura Member of Parliament’s office had secured machinery for leveling communal roads in Nyakinengo, and that the government had resumed work on water boosters to extend water supply to reservoir tanks in Ruhinda and Nyakagyeme.
Mr. Geoffrey Kyomukama, the Rukungiri District boss, pledged to intensify community mobilization efforts and hold meetings with affected residents to resolve their concerns. He emphasized that his goal was to deliver essential services to the people, and he would first assess reports to plan the necessary meetings.
However, Godson Mubangizi, the Nyakagyeme Subcounty Chairperson, expressed frustration at the ongoing complaints, stating that his office had limited authority to act on the issues. He urged residents to accept the available services and move forward, despite the ongoing challenges.
The situation remains tense as residents await the fulfillment of promises made by their leaders.
