The territorial police in Rukungiri are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths of two individuals who were allegedly killed near the waters of Lake Edward.
The deceased are identified as Sunday Moses, 22 years old, a Mukiga fisherman at Rwenshama landing site, residing in Rumira cell, Bugangari parish, Bugangari sub-county, Rukungiri district and Namanya Innocent, 26 years old, also a Mukiga fisherman at Rwenshama landing site, residing in Kyehunde village, Bwambara parish, Bwambara sub-county, Rukungiri district.
Reportedly, on July 8, 2024, at approximately 2:00 PM, five fishermen, namely Atwibu Mwesigwa, Mukasa Rajabu Midedo, Byaruhanga Apollo, Sunday Moses, and Namanya Innocent, employees of Mugenyi Aisha, departed for Lake Edward to engage in fishing activities. They spent three days fishing.
On July 11, 2024, around 10:30 AM, while preparing their fishing hooks in the Kagezi area of DR Congo, Atwibu Mwesigwa observed Congolese soldiers approaching them. He alerted his companions, and they fled in different directions as the soldiers opened fire. Upon regrouping at their rendezvous point, they discovered that Namanya Innocent and Sunday Moses were missing. The remaining three—Mukasa Rajabu Midedo, Byaruhanga Apollo, and Mwesigwa Atwibu—returned to Rwenshama landing site and informed their employer, Aisha Namugenyi, and residents about the incident.
Subsequently, families and friends launched a search for the missing individuals in the Kagezi area. On July 15, 2024, the bodies of Namanya Innocent and Sunday Moses were found deceased along the shores of Lake Edward in the Kagezi area of DR Congo.
The case of their disappearance was initially reported to Rwenshama police station and is now being investigated as a homicide. Statements have been recorded from survivors, and postmortem examinations have been conducted. Investigations are currently ongoing.
