The territorial police in Rukungiri are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a suspected robber, from whom a gun was recovered. On 25/02/2025, at approximately 2030 hours, police were alerted by a responsible citizen who informed the OC FFU (Operations) Rukungiri CPS, IP Tukamwesiga Nicholas, about a mob action at Butimba on Karegyesa road, Rukungiri town, involving unidentified thugs armed with an AK-47.
Police responded swiftly to the scene, where they found a body lying in a pool of blood alongside an AK-47 rifle. The firearm was identified as UG POL 565810907-27608, loaded with 28 rounds of ammunition. It had been stolen by unknown assailants from No. 70464 PC Adriko Benard on 19/01/2025 near Kabale University – Rukungiri Branch, at Nyakaina Cell, Buyanja Town Council, Rukungiri district.
The deceased was identified as Akampurira Marc Kamp, a resident of Nyakina village, Buyanja sub-county, based on a copy of his National ID found in his wallet. The body was taken to Rwakabengo Health Center III mortuary for a postmortem.
Preliminary information indicates that the two thugs, armed with a single rifle, had robbed Agaba Kenneth’s hardware shop of 8 million UGX at gunpoint, firing one shot, but fortunately causing no injuries. However, the gun jammed during the robbery. As the suspects struggled with the jammed firearm, they fled the scene, but local residents quickly gave chase. The mob apprehended the suspect with the gun, who was then lynched. The second suspect, believed to be the deceased’s brother, managed to escape and is currently on the run.
We commend the bravery of the local residents and encourage the public to continue providing timely information to aid in the fight against crime. Investigations are ongoing, and efforts to apprehend the second suspect are underway according to ASP Maate Elly, PRO Kigezi.
