The territorial police in Rukiga are currently conducting an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Benon Mbabazi, a 63-year-old resident of Nyamabare cell in Muhanga ward, Muhanga town council, Rukiga district. It is alleged that the victim was assaulted by his family members, leading to his immediate death.

The suspects in this case are Mugisha Winnie, a 62-year-old woman and the wife of the deceased, and Tumukunde Onesmas, a 28-year-old secondary school teacher and the son of the deceased. Both individuals reside at the mentioned address.

According to reports, on December 26, 2023, at approximately 09:00hrs, a quarrel ensued between the deceased and his son, Tumukunde Onesmus. The altercation escalated to physical violence, with Tumukunde allegedly assaulting his father using a stick. Mugisha Winnie, the wife of the deceased, reportedly watched the altercation unfold.

Later that evening, the deceased retired to bed where he succumbed to the injuries sustained during the earlier assault. The police were alerted, and the scene of the crime was duly visited and documented by the District Police Commander (DPC) of Rukiga and the investigative team. The victim’s body was then taken to Kabale Referral Hospital for a postmortem examination, revealing that the deceased had been strangled and had multiple bruises on the neck, buttocks, chest, and abdomen.

The body was subsequently handed over to relatives for a proper burial. One suspect, Mugisha Winnie, is currently in custody, while others involved are reportedly evading arrest. The police investigation is ongoing.
