The territorial police in Rukungiri District are searching for a suspect accused of murdering his brother in a dispute over milk. The incident occurred on October 2, 2024, at Katooma Cell in Kigaaga Parish, Nyakagyeme Sub-county, Rukungiri District.
The suspect, identified as Ategyeka Barnabas, allegedly attacked and killed his older brother, 48-year-old Henry Mugarura, a UPDF veteran and resident of the same area.
According to police reports, the two brothers clashed after Mugarura left his wife, Kiconco Blessing, at home and went to the family house where Barnabas was staying with their sister, Tushabe Annet. Annet reportedly raised an alarm, accusing Mugarura of attempting to assault her, which prompted Barnabas to pick up a piece of iron bar and fatally attack his brother.
Kiconco, who heard the commotion, rushed to check but found the house locked from the outside. She quickly reported the matter to Nyakagyeme Police, who later arrived at the scene to find Mugarura dead. The suspect had fled.
Police visited the scene, recovered the iron bar used in the assault, and took Mugarura’s body to Rwakabengo Health Center III for postmortem. Investigations are ongoing.
ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi region police spokesperson, confirmed the incident and said efforts to apprehend the suspect are underway.
