Police in Rubirizi District dispersed a demonstration organized by local residents on 4th March 2025 due to the poor road network in the area.

The illegal demonstration, which was aimed at inciting violence, took place around 4:50 PM in Katerera Town Council, Rubirizi District.

Marcial Tumusiime, the Greater Bushenyi police spokesperson, confirmed the incident and reported that two individuals were arrested. One of the suspects has been identified as Isaac Mukiiza, a 22-year-old self-employed resident of Nyakagyezi 1 Cell in Nyakagyezi Ward, Katerera Town Council, Rubirizi District.

Tumusiime also mentioned that the second suspect has not yet been identified.

It is alleged that Mukiiza and an unnamed individual led the illegal demonstration, accusing leaders in the Katerera constituency of failing to address the issue of poor road infrastructure.

According to police, the area suffers from poor roads, especially after rainfall, and some parts of the constituency lack electricity. The demonstrators, mainly bodaboda riders, mobilized to express their dissatisfaction with these issues.

SPC Olive Namudoola, the OC Station at Katerera Police Station, explained that the demonstrators were carrying yellow placards highlighting the poor state of the roads and the lack of electricity. Police intervened, blocking the demonstration and arresting two of the participants. The rest fled with their motorcycles. During questioning, the arrested individuals stated that the demonstration was motivated by the poor road conditions, which have led to frequent accidents and hindered the delivery of goods.
