Pensioners in Rukungiri District have raised concerns over an unfulfilled promise of a 5% increment on their pension, which they say has not been received as promised by the Ministry of Public Service.

Justus Tumwesigye, a retired head teacher and representative for retired head teachers at UNATU, told our reporter that the government announced an increment for the years 2021/2022, 2022/2023, and 2023/2024. However, to date, they have not received anything related to this 5% pension increment.

He added that they have repeatedly approached the authorities about the matter, but there has been no response. He emphasized that it is high time the authorities took action to improve the living standards of pensioners.

Paddy Twesigye, another pensioner from Kebisoni, insisted that since the promise was made, the pensioners should receive the 5% increment. He urged leaders at the sub-county level to come together and follow up on the issue collectively.

These concerns were raised during an end-of-year meeting of the Rukungiri District Retired Head Teachers’ Association. The meeting was organized and sponsored by Mr. Maanige Wenceslas, proprietor of Broad Educational Consult, and held at Platinum Classic Suites in Buyanja.

Maanige, who hosted the meeting, highlighted the importance of sensitizing parents on investing in their children’s education, even in government-aided schools. He emphasized that parents should contribute financially to ensure their children are well-fed, support teachers, and help build additional classrooms or hire more teachers when necessary.

David Kapiira Turyazayo, chairperson of the Rukungiri District Retired Head Teachers’ Association, explained that the association aims to achieve social, economic, and political values. He noted that the association was formed to keep members united and active in development efforts, as many retired employees tend to disappear and are forgotten.

The function was attended by several dignitaries, including former Rubabo County legislator Mary Paula Turyahikayo, who is considering running for the Rukungiri District Woman MP seat in 2026, Rukungiri CAO Hajj Swaliki Masokoi Wasswa, LC5 Chairperson Geoffrey Kyomukama, District Speaker James Turyamubona, and retired education officers.
