Parents and local authorities in Katonya Parish, Nyakishenyi Sub County, Rukungiri District, have raised concerns over the inadequate and poor condition of toilets at Katonya Primary School. They fear the unsanitary state of the facilities puts students at risk of contracting diseases.

Bomugisha Robert, the LC1 chairperson of Burebane Village, confirmed the severity of the situation, explaining that all the toilets at the school are temporary and in poor condition. He emphasized the urgent need for immediate intervention to protect the students’ health.

Asiimwe Lovence, the speaker of Nyakishenyi Sub County, acknowledged the issue, stating that the sub-county council is aware of the problem. After realizing they lacked the resources to address the challenge, they wrote to the district council for assistance but received no response. Lovence stressed the importance of resolving the issue before the temporary toilets pose serious health risks to the students.

Ainebyoona Brian Bantu, the LC5 councilor for Nyakishenyi Sub County, pledged to submit a formal report to the district authorities to prompt action on the issue.

Mwesigwa Mathias Rwabugumi, the Rukungiri District Secretary for Health, promised to collaborate with other district leaders to prioritize the construction of proper latrines at Katonya Primary School in the next financial year.
