Residents of Nyakinengo Parish in Nyakagyeme Sub County, Rukungiri District, are raising concerns over the poor condition of the roads and bridges in their area.
The most affected are the Katungu 1 and 2 roads, Kabahesi road, and Kabahesi Bridge, which connects Buyanja to Nyakagyeme. These infrastructure issues are hindering the transport of crops and other essential goods.
Gumisiriza Kihango, a resident of Kishanda Village, noted that students have missed two days of school due to the damaged bridge, which connects Buyanja and Nyakagyeme to Kabahesi Primary School, Karunoni Community School, and St. Luke Primary School. He added that previous efforts by residents to repair sections of the road have been in vain, as rains quickly erode the soil.
Gumisiriza further explained that, due to the poor state of the roads, residents are forced to take alternative routes, particularly when it rains. This has resulted in higher transportation costs, especially with the rising price of fuel. He urged the district authorities to address the issue promptly.
Speaking to our reporter, Beineobulamu Bernard, the LC1 Chairperson of Kishanda 1 Village, expressed concern over the rising transport costs, as people are forced to use longer routes to reach town. She called on the authorities to address the broken Kabahesi Bridge and improve the condition of the roads.
In response, Engineer Julius Bagira, the Rukungiri District Road Engineer, assured residents that the district has started rehabilitating several community roads in poor condition. He urged residents to be patient as the district is currently budgeting for the repair of these roads and bridges, especially given the ongoing rainy season.
