Hundreds of older persons in Rukungiri District have benefited from a two-day free medical camp aimed at addressing the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the region.
The camp, held at Kasoroza Church of Uganda Parish in Rwerere Town Council, Rukungiri District, was organized by Rwerere Twetambire Health Cooperative with support from Kampala Medical and Allied Health Workers Cooperative Society (KAMACOS) and the German Cooperative and Raiffeisen Confederation.
More than 700 patients received free treatment and screening services for conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, dental problems, and vision impairments. Beneficiaries also received medications and corrective eyeglasses, offering relief to many who previously lacked access to essential care.
Elderly residents expressed dissatisfaction with the limited awareness and treatment options for NCDs in the district, highlighting the need for increased community outreach, health education, and improved referral systems.
The coordinator of Rwerere Twetambire Health Cooperative, Ms. Pamella Komugisha Tagobya, emphasized that the camp was designed to bridge the health care gap for disadvantaged populations. Health workers from Nyakagyeme Health Centre III praised the initiative for extending specialized care to hard-to-reach communities and urged residents to follow medical advice provided during the outreach.
Local leaders, including Mr. Tagobya Prosper, Town Clerk of Mbarara City North Division, commended the impressive turnout and encouraged ongoing health education to improve quality of life and increase life expectancy in the region.
