In a bid to combat poverty, over 100 hens were distributed today to members of Boona Bagaigahare in Mabanga Parish, Kebisoni Sub-county, Rukungiri District. The initiative, aligned with the government’s poverty eradication goals, brought joy to beneficiaries who had long awaited the fulfillment of this promise.
Clare Ninsiima and Jovolet Bijukababo, two of the beneficiaries, expressed gratitude for the support, vowing to care for the hens to create sustainable livelihoods. They commended Hon. Peace Rugambwa and President Yoweri Museveni for spearheading programs that uplift vulnerable communities.
However, some beneficiaries noted delays in receiving the items, which had caused doubt. They appealed to Hon. Peace Rugambwa to provide additional resources such as mattresses for the elderly, coffee seedlings, goats, and pigs to extend benefits to others in need.
Despite today’s milestone, some members, including Bwariisa Diina and Evas Turyomunsi, voiced dissatisfaction, claiming they were left out. They criticized the district leadership for hindering the timely distribution of promised items, including goats, cows, and pigs, despite preparations such as shelter construction. They called on President Museveni to intervene and ensure they receive their rightful share.
Elderly members, including 77-year-old Benon Nbyanabo, 78-year-old Frugyensio Tibiinekyorora, and Dimitria Kekihabura, also shared their plight. They lamented the delay in receiving mattresses promised under the program, emphasizing their inability to work and the pressing need for support.
Muhebwa Mackline Turyahikayo, the coordinator of Boona Bagaigahare in Kebisoni Sub-county, handed over the hens to the beneficiaries. She praised President Museveni and Hon. Peace Rugambwa for their efforts to fulfill these promises but urged district leaders to prioritize the needs of the poor over political disagreements.
“The items, including goats, pigs, cows, coffee seedlings, and mattresses for the elderly, are already available. Leaders should resolve their differences to ensure the program achieves its goal of eradicating poverty,” Muhebwa emphasized.
