Nyarushanje LC3 Chairperson Condemns Excessive Alcohol Consumption as the Leading Contributor to Domestic Violence in Families

It has been confirmed that the challenge of domestic violence has been increasing daily among the residents, particularly in the families of Nyarushanje, due to alcoholism and poverty.

Speaking with our reporter, Michael Musiime, the Nyarushanje LC3 Chairperson, expressed his concern about the growing domestic violence in the area, which has resulted in deaths, imprisonments, and the further neglect of family responsibilities. Musiime condemns excessive alcohol consumption as the leading cause of daily domestic violence in Nyarushanje, where both married men and women have turned it into a daily routine, resulting in high levels of poverty.

He raised his concern about a recent case where a married man killed his wife in Mbwanga and then reported himself to the police. Musiime urged cooperation and love among married couples for better development and prosperity.

Nicholas Rwaboona, the Nyarushanje Youth Councillor, also spoke with our reporter and shared that domestic violence has been a longstanding challenge in the area, with ignorant residents consuming alcohol excessively, which often leads to alcohol controlling the minds and judgment of many people.

Nicholas warned the youth of Nyarushanje and the entire nation to stop this habit and focus on important things that can build their careers and help them achieve their dreams. He also condemned the youth for engaging in alcoholism competitions.

He further condemned family leaders who prioritize alcoholism over taking responsibility for raising their children, noting that many buy alcohol instead of healthy foods such as meat, milk, and other nutritious options.

Barnabas Biingi, the Ibanda Parish Councillor for Nyarushanje Subcounty, also spoke with our reporter and highlighted the high levels of misunderstandings, illiteracy, and poor cooperation among family members as major causes of domestic violence in Nyarushanje. He mentioned that men and women often fight over savings group money. Additionally, he condemned women who encourage children to hate their fathers for no reason in order to gain favor from them.

Barnabas also appealed to church authorities to assist in addressing the issue, as residents tend to respect the power of the church and faith more than local leaders.
