Residents and local leaders of Nyarubumba cell in Bwanga parish, Nyarushanje Sub County in Rukungiri district, took decisive action on Wednesday by severing ties with one of their own, Mugisha Leo.
This decision was reached during a village meeting, where residents accused Mugisha of disregarding local leadership, instigating violence against residents without just cause, and engaging in theft alongside his family members.
According to Karugaba Charles, the Chairperson of Nyarubumba cell, an incident involving Mugisha’s son stealing a pig from a neighbor’s home escalated when Mugisha and his family members attempted to assault the leaders who intervened. Despite their efforts to resolve the matter, Mugisha’s son was apprehended and found in possession of a weapon, leading to his arrest and subsequent release on bail.
Karugaba further explained that attempts to expel Mugisha from the community were thwarted by legal restrictions preventing the expulsion of residents who own land. Additionally, Mugisha’s elder son has allegedly issued threats against Karugaba and other villagers, prompting Karugaba to report the matter to security authorities in Rukungiri district.
Expressing collective outrage, residents have disowned Mugisha’s family, citing concerns for the safety and security of the community. They have made it clear that they will not support Mugisha unless he seeks forgiveness from the community through a formal apology facilitated by the village leadership.
