Nurses and Midwives in Rukungiri district, led by Mr. Alex Twekwase, the Kigezi region coordinator for the Nurses Union, expressed their dismay regarding a recent news story about a nurse allegedly involved in witchcraft.

This concern was addressed during a meeting held on Tuesday at Rukungiri Health Center 4, organized by the Rukungiri municipality nurses and midwives. The meeting aimed to plan a budget for the upcoming International Nurses Day scheduled for May 12, 2024, in Rukungiri.

Annet Katusiime Mugyenyi, a midwife at Rukungiri Health Center 4 and the chairperson of the Nurses and Midwives of Rukungiri Municipality, expressed her deep sadness over the alleged involvement of a nurse in witchcraft. She strongly condemned this behavior, deeming it unprofessional. Annet emphasized that such unprofessional actions not only tarnish the reputation of the individual involved but also reflect poorly on the entire nursing profession.

Annet highlighted that, according to medical ethics, there is no place for witchcraft, urging her colleagues in the nursing and midwifery field to adhere to their professional ethics when carrying out their duties.

Alex Twekwase, the Kigezi region coordinator for the Nurses Union and the secretary for nurses and midwives in the Rukungiri branch, also strongly denounced the unprofessional conduct exhibited by the nurse, Jackline, who was allegedly involved in witchcraft. He expressed concern that such incidents are becoming more common and attributed them to nurses who may have been trained at unaccredited institutions. Alex emphasized the need to put an end to these actions and called upon all nurses and midwives to uphold the standards of their profession.

Furthermore, Alex urged everyone to support the preparations for the upcoming International Nurses Day, scheduled for May 12, 2024, in Rukungiri district, where the President of Uganda will be the guest of honor. He encouraged medical professionals to participate in the event and use the opportunity to enhance their understanding of medical ethics.
