Youths in Ntungamo District have been urged to embrace vocational studies alongside their non-vocational courses to become job creators, a shift from past perceptions that joining vocational schools was a sign of failure.
This message was delivered by Esau Nsiimire, representing the office of the Ntungamo Resident District Commissioner (RDC), during the closure of a two-week workshop organized by MTN Uganda in partnership with the Maendeleo Foundation. The workshop, aimed at equipping youths in Ntungamo with basic computer and online skills, took place at the Rap Tech Institute of Business and Technology in Ntungamo Municipality and saw the participation of over 200 youths from various parts of the district.
Nsiimire emphasized that vocational studies equip youths with practical skills essential for their daily lives in the workforce. He encouraged the youths to set developmental goals and prioritize their spending on initiatives that would further their personal and professional growth. Nsiimire also commended MTN Uganda and the Maendeleo Foundation for their role in enhancing technology access in Uganda by providing computer knowledge to young people.
John Chrysostom Walusimbi, representing the Maendeleo Foundation, highlighted the organization’s partnership with MTN Uganda to provide ICT and entrepreneurship training under the Digital Access Literacy Project. This initiative aims to empower Ugandans, particularly the youth, with computer skills. Walusimbi noted that the project has so far trained 4,800 youths across 31 districts in Uganda. He encouraged the participants to continuously practice and apply the skills they had acquired.
Aijuka Rodgers, the proprietor of the Rap Tech Institute of Business and Technology, praised MTN Uganda and the Maendeleo Foundation for their efforts in exposing youths to the digital world. He noted that the training has enabled many students to study online, thanks to the computer knowledge they have gained.
Akagira Princes Komugyera, a student at Rap Tech Institute, also expressed her gratitude to MTN Uganda and the Maendeleo Foundation for providing training on how to use the internet for studies and daily activities. She shared that the knowledge gained from the training has empowered them to study and trade online, as well as use the internet as a tool for survival.
