Residents of Ruyonza Parish in Nyarushanje Sub-county, Rukungiri District, are raising concerns over the prolonged delay in electricity connection.
Four years ago, electricity pole holes were dug in the areas of Mukishanda, Kabimba, and Kamirantende, but no poles have been installed since. These uncovered holes are now causing accidents, endangering both animals and people.
Kenneth Ayebazibwe and Rwakagi Sempala, local residents, expressed their frustration, noting that despite multiple complaints to the relevant authorities and the company responsible, UECDL, no action has been taken. The open holes have resulted in numerous injuries, with reports of animals suffering fractured legs after falling into them.
Former Ruyonza Parish Councilor, Bibyomumisho Pauson Kajere, also voiced his dissatisfaction with UECDL, citing the potential loss of his cow, which fell into one of the holes and now struggles to walk due to multiple fractures. He mentioned that several community members have been injured, and many have lost animals because of these hazards.
Despite writing a formal complaint to UECDL, the situation remains unresolved. The residents are urgently appealing to their leaders to either expedite the electricity connection or cover the open holes to prevent further accidents, which could potentially result in loss of life.
