Residents of quarantined sub-counties in the Ntungamo district have earned a lease of life after the district anti-foot and mouth task force adjusted the guidelines in the management of the disease allowing for the slaughter and selling of animals during the festive season.

The Ntungamo district veterinary officer Dr. Yaake Basulira announced the new measures that gave a new lease of life on Thursday during the district council meeting.

He said the sub-counties shall set up slaughter areas as well as animal loading centers in the markets that shall be agreed upon in conjunction with the district task force. Such centers according to Dr. Yaake shall be located near the beneficiaries but also suitable enough not to spread the FMD.

Sub counties of Itojo, Ntungamo, Nyarutuntu, Rweikiniro, Ruhaama, Ngoma, Rubaare, Kayonza, and Rwentobo Rwahi town councils have been under quarantine since April this year following an outbreak of foot and mouth disease among other animal diseases.
