Residents across Ntungamo District have voiced concerns about a prolonged drought that is causing significant losses and raising fears of an impending famine in the coming months.
According to residents, they had expected rainfall in mid-August and planted their seeds accordingly. However, the persistent sunshine since then is now causing their crops to dry up.
Judith Ayebazibwe, a resident of Kitwe Town Council, shared with our reporter that they received some rain in August, which prompted them to plant, but the sun has persisted ever since, threatening their crops.
Praise Mureebe from Rukoni West Sub-county expressed similar worries, stating that they fear severe famine due to the ongoing drought causing their crops to wither. He called on the government to investigate the cause of the unseasonal weather, noting that August typically brought rain in previous years.
Nibamanya Wilberforce, a resident of Rubaare Town Council, echoed these concerns, stating that their crops are suffering and livestock farmers are now forced to travel long distances in search of water and pasture. Despite this, he remains hopeful for rain, mentioning that they sometimes see clouds that give them a sense of optimism.
Samuel Mucunguzi Rwakigoba, the Ntungamo District Chairperson, confirmed the drought’s impact across the district. He urged residents to increase efforts to protect the environment to help mitigate climate change.
