The Ntungamo Resident District Commissioner, Isaiah Byarugaba Kanyamahane, has urged women to shift from non-profit associations to development-oriented enterprises that can contribute to family welfare and sustainability.

Presiding over the annual general meeting of the Ruhaama Progressive Women Tukore SACCO at Hope Discovery Cathedral in Ntungamo Town on Saturday, he said many women prefer associations that fund the procurement of household items such as plates, pans, mattresses, cupboards, and clothes, which are often accumulated for keeps, while husbands struggle with major expenses like school fees.

He encouraged women to refocus their efforts toward supporting their families, contributing to children’s welfare, and promoting financial inclusion. He also called on organized women’s associations to take the lead in fighting domestic violence and other social vices.

The SACCO Chairperson, Nasuuna Beatrance, noted that the SACCO—initiated by city lawyer Richard Barungi—has played a key role in fighting household poverty by enabling women to access credit for income-generating activities. She said that as a result, issues such as domestic violence, education, and general income development have been addressed.

Counsel Barungi urged the women to strengthen their leadership standards to build trust among members, which is essential for attracting more savings.

The Guest of Honor at the meeting, Ms. Goodlar Behakanira, commended the women for pooling resources, saying it would drive their families toward development. She advised them to reduce pride and extravagance after gaining income, especially when their husbands are facing financial difficulties.

Founded in 2023, the Ruhaama Progressive Women Tukore SACCO, located in Ntungamo Municipality, currently has a membership of 147 women, a share capital of 7 million shillings, and savings exceeding 4 million shillings.
