The Ntungamo District Council on Thursday held its final council sitting, marking the end of the 2021–2026 council term with the approval of a UGX 76.1 billion budget for the 2026/2027 financial year.

While presenting the budget during the council session, the Secretary for Finance, Planning and Administration, Atuhaire Elijah, the outgoing LC5 Councilor for Rugarama North Sub-county, revealed that 97.4 percent of the budget will be funded by the central government, 2.5 percent from locally generated revenue, and 0.1 percent from external funding.

Elijah noted that more than 60 percent of the budget has been allocated to salaries and wages, with priority areas including health services, education, and infrastructure development aimed at improving service delivery across the district.

Presiding over his final council session as Speaker, Nicholas Twikirize Mugyenyi, the outgoing LC5 Councilor for Kitwe Town Council, commended fellow councilors for successfully fulfilling their mandate during the five-year term. He highlighted achievements such as the extension of schools, health facilities, roads, and water services to different communities within the district.

Twikirize urged the incoming councilors to maintain unity and build on the achievements of the outgoing council by expanding service delivery to the people.

Ntungamo District Vice Chairperson, Asuman Kigongo, who also serves as LC5 Councilor for Nyamunuka Town Council, applauded his colleagues for the unity, teamwork, and cooperation exhibited throughout their term in office. He said the council managed to renovate the district headquarters, strengthen local revenue collection, and bring essential services closer to the people during their five years of leadership.

The Deputy Resident District Commissioner for Ntungamo, Rosemary Atuhaire, praised the outgoing council for maintaining good working relations between political leaders and technical staff, saying the cooperation greatly contributed to improved service delivery in the district.

She also appreciated the district leadership for allocating land for the construction of the RDC’s office and High Court premises, describing the move as important in extending security and judicial services closer to residents.

The session concluded with the awarding of Certificates of Recognition to all district councilors in appreciation of their service during the 2021–2026 term.

Out of the 63 councilors who make up the Ntungamo District Council, only 22 will return to serve in the next council term of 2026–2031.
