The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has issued a directive requiring all party structure leaders who have been nominated as independent candidates in the ongoing 2025/2026 general elections to resign their leadership positions immediately.
In a circular signed by the Secretary General, Rt. Hon. Richard Todwong, the NRM noted that some leaders who either lost in the party primaries or chose not to participate had gone ahead to seek nomination as independents, an action described as going against the official party position.
“The purpose of this communication is to direct those who have been nominated as independents to resign your positions as party leaders and hand over the offices to your vice chairpersons or respective NRM Party chairpersons,” Todwong stated.
He warned that leaders who defy the directive would be suspended from engaging in electoral activities on behalf of the NRM. The move, according to the Secretary General, is aimed at ensuring cohesion within the party and smooth coordination of campaign activities ahead of the general elections.
The directive comes as the Electoral Commission continues the nomination exercise for candidates at all levels, which began on September 3 and will close on October 16, 2025.
