Residents of Karambi Parish, Nyarutuntu Subcounty in Ntungamo District, have expressed frustration over the worsening condition of the Karambi–Nyaburiza road, which they say has been neglected for years.
The road, which was last worked on in 2018, has deteriorated due to continuous rainfall and the absence of trenches, leaving it nearly impassable. Locals say this has disrupted transport, increased travel costs, and affected access to vital services.
Speaking to our reporter, Charles Bagarukayo, a resident of Karambi Parish, said the road’s poor state has made it difficult for patients to access Nyaburiza Health Centre II since there is no alternative route. He also noted that coffee and banana farmers struggle to transport their produce to markets, especially during the rainy season. He appealed to government leaders to intervene by providing a tractor and digging trenches to restore accessibility.

A boda boda rider, Ivan Asiimwe, who operates between Kyamate stage and Karambi, echoed similar concerns. He said road users are often stranded during the rainy season and criticized the government for neglecting the road, pointing out that in the past 10 years, it has only been rehabilitated once. He emphasized that communal work alone cannot address the problem, calling for urgent government intervention to fill potholes and make the road passable.

Another resident, Rodgers Karugaba, who drives a Tukutuku, described the road as impassable for both motorists and pedestrians. He said the community has repeatedly raised concerns with their leaders, but nothing has been done, forcing them to take longer routes and spend more on transport.

When contacted, John Wilton Katooma, the LC3 Chairperson of Nyarutuntu Subcounty, acknowledged the challenge and revealed that his office has never received road funds since the subcounty was created. He said he has already written to the area Member of Parliament and the District LC5 Chairperson about the matter and is still awaiting their response.

Residents now await government intervention to ensure the Karambi–Nyaburiza road is rehabilitated before the situation worsens further.
