In a bid to alleviate persistent water shortages in the cells of Karuhara and Torotoro in Ndago Parish, Nyarushanje Subcounty, a new borehole construction project has been launched, funded by the Humanitarian Development Agency, a non-governmental organization.

The project, expected to be completed within one month for 3.5 million shillings, includes casing, hand pump installation, and other essential infrastructure to ensure long-term sustainability and access to clean water for the community, which has long struggled with unsafe water sources.

Aspiring Member of Parliament for Rubabo Constituency, Doreen Busingye, who officiated the launch, urged the community to take full responsibility for the borehole, cautioning against vandalism and neglect.

Mwesigwa Davis, the LC1 Chairperson of Karuhara Cell, praised Busingye’s swift response to their plea for clean water. He noted that upon raising their concerns, she listened and acted immediately. He emphasized that this borehole will transform their lives, as residents had been relying on contaminated river water, putting them at risk of waterborne diseases.

He added that the two villages had been walking long distances to fetch water, but now look forward to easier access. He also revealed that a committee has already been formed to monitor the borehole’s proper usage.

Residents Angironi Ariho and Gaudensia Orishaba expressed relief and gratitude, commending Busingye for her support. They described the daily struggle to find drinking water and the physical pain caused by carrying heavy water containers from distant sources.

They highlighted the health risks they have faced due to persistent consumption of dirty water, including typhoid, diarrhea, and dysentery.
