The Grade One Magistrate’s Court in Ibanda, presided over by Her Worship Edith Tusabe, has remanded eight people to Nyabuhikye Government Prison in connection with the alleged murder of Police Constable Suleiman Chemonges.

The 28-year-old officer, who was attached to Bisheshe Police Post, had been deployed to provide security at the burial of Lazarus Kahangire, a 47-year-old inmate who died while on remand at Nyabuhikye Government Prison. The burial turned tragic on April 6, 2025, when Chemonges was reportedly attacked and lynched by a mob.

The suspects remanded include Gaston Muhwezi (27), Mwesigye Sam Kikurungi (53), Alfred Arinaitwe alias Mabere (43), Christine Atuhaire (37), Allen Nuwatuha (23), Alex Ahimbisibwe (18), Christine Komugisha (19), and Bayron Katungye (29).

Authorities confirmed that several other suspects believed to be involved in the incident are still on the run and are being sought by police.

During the court proceedings, some of the accused individuals raised concerns about not receiving medical treatment since their arrest. However, the court could not address their plea, citing that the matter is within the jurisdiction of the High Court.

Magistrate Tusabe ordered that the accused be remanded until April 29, 2025, when the case will be formally mentioned.
