Muslim leaders in Kabale District have spoken out against the common practice in Uganda of associating Muslims with terrorism, emphasizing that Muslims are peace-loving people.
The leaders, led by Sheikh Kabu Lule, the Muslim Kadhi of Kabale District, made the remarks today during Eid Al-Adha prayers held at Al Madina Stadium in Southern Division, Kabale Municipality.
Sheikh Kabu urged that individuals who commit acts of terrorism should be held accountable for their actions, rather than blaming the entire Islamic religion.
He criticized the persistent bias against Muslims in Uganda, noting that they are often the first to be arrested whenever a terrorism-related incident occurs.
Sheikh Kabu Lule emphasized the need to distinguish between the actions of individuals and the values of the broader Muslim community, and called for a more informed and balanced understanding.
Speaking after the prayers, Sheikh Kassim Kamugisha, an executive member of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council, also stressed the importance of promoting interfaith dialogue and understanding. He suggested organizing workshops, seminars, and community events to help eliminate the negative bias against Muslims in Uganda.
He urged Muslims to actively defend their faith and protect their image from being wrongly associated with terrorism.
Sheikh Kassim further advocated for the implementation of policies that combat discrimination and promote equality for all Ugandans, regardless of their religion.
He concluded by stating that through unity and cooperation, the country can foster greater understanding, empathy, and inclusivity.
